Oregairu, a romantic comedy anime unlike others you've seen in your life. If other generic romcom anime focus on the bright side of high school students' life, this one will show you the reality that just a few realize it's happened. The story revolves around Hikigaya Hachiman, a boy that has different view to society. One fateful day, he is punished by his teacher for writing an essay of mocking modern social relationship. As a punishment, he have to join the volunteer club that consists of only one member, the ice queen Yukino Yukinoshita. The club's main objective is to help students who seeks their support in achieving their goals. As Hachiman and Yukino use their wits to solve people's problem, will his rotten view of society be a hindrance or a tool he can use to his advantage?
The plot, what can I say? this anime has the ingredients to create one of the best high school based anime. Comparing to Nisekoi where we just see all characters are having fun with their life, in Oregairu we will see the true face of humans. The plot is quite complicated to me because there are deeper meaning in every scenes that happened throughout the show. The characters that we see may different from their true colours. Sometimes, they love to act friendly and kindly so that people around them will love and not turn their back on them. After finished watching the show, you might want to think again if you really know people around you or they are just put up an act in front of you. You will also want to think again what you want to achieve in your life, just a normal life that bother no ones, or a life that always depend on someone but at the same time, you might hurt them, realize it or not. So, for the plot that seems simple yet complicated, I will rate 9 out of 10.
In terms of characters, Oregairu have a lot of fascinating characters that really served up well in the show. Every character have their own personality. There is a manipulative sister, a chunibyo, a trap, a friend that loves to put up a fake smile just to make others happy and many more. I also love the part where the side characters are not forgotten but always appear to help main character solve the troubles that occur. In some cases like Naruto where he will always help someone in need, the side characters will just show up in several episodes and disappear completely after then. Even though they may be fan-favourites, once their jobs done, they have to bid farewell to the show. For me, the characters that stand out compared to main characters are Komachi, Hiratsuka sensei and Yukinoshita Haruno. Komachi, one of the best little in the anime world, she is not exist just to cheer up the atmosphere, but always act mature and gives advice to Hachiman when he need the most. Hiratsuka sensei, the character that understand Hachiman the most even though she rarely spends time with him. She understands how the world works and that's why she wants to help Hachiman find his purpose in life. Haruno, Yukino's sister, the one that really loves Hachiman's view of society. She will always provoke the relationship between Hachiman and his friends because she believe they are 'fake'. To sum up, I will score the characters in the anime 10 over 10.
Now, let's going through the music and sound in this show. For starter, the opening is "Yukitoki" by Nagi Yanagi while the ending is "Hello Alone" by Saori hayami and Nao Touyama. I love the opening, it is catchy and really synchronize with the show theme, romcom. But, once the show ends, and so the opening. It is a good opening but not the type that will last long in fans' memories. Unlike the opening of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, "AGAIN" by Yui, it is a song that live years after the show ends. For the ending, I quite like it but others might have different opinion about it, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Anyway, I realize that both opening and ending give me a similar vibe. Compared to other anime such as Boku no Hero Academia where the opening and ending are opposite to each other, this anime take another route and it is indeed a good choice. Overall, my mark for music and sound for the show is 8 out of 10.
The last part, the animation of Oregairu. The studio that responsible for adapting the light novel in Brain's Base. They are well known for producing Durarara!! and Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun. However, the animation style in Oregairu is distinct compared to other anime that they produced. I don't think it is bad choice, it's actually nice to see a new stlye of animation. I don't think there are other anime out there that have similar style of animation like Oregaitu. It is simple yet unique to me because I like it the way it is. The animation may not be astonishing like Hyouka even though both of it are slice of life anime, but they still can put up a good fight against Hyouka with their own way. Not to mention, characters design are attractive and give a manga-like vibe. In a nutshell, the animation of the show is one of its kind and I will give 8 out of 10 for it.
In a conclusion, Oregairu is the anime that carve the path for more romcom light novels and manga to be adapted. When the anime released in 2013, it is one the most unexpected best show in that year due to its characters and storytelling. The show got thousands, maybe millions of devoted fans until this day. The main character, Hachiman also is one of the most famous characters in Myanimelist. There are many romcom anime that comes out after Oregairu but most of them can't hold a candle to Oregairu. I believe that Oregairu did well when it comes to explore the heart of human. It shows that every person is different on the surface and inside their heart. It also prove that nobody is perfect or kind all the time. To wrap this up, I will rate overall of the show as 8.5 out of 10. That's all from me, thank you for spending your time here.
