Humans can't escape from making mistakes in their life. The question is, how people react to your mistakes and how you redeem yourself after making those mistakes. Our main protagonist, Ishida Shouya had to face the consequences of his actions in the hardest way possible, where everyone around him are ignoring him as he is invisible. His story start when he is still at elementary school. As a wild youth, he always find ways to enjoy his life even though his actions may harm people around him. When Nishimiya Shouko, a deaf girl transfer to his class, Shouya and the rest of his class thoughtlessly bully her for fun. When her mother notifies the school about the incident, Shouya is the only one blamed for everything and Shouko transferred out of school. He is then heartlessly ostracized throughout elementary and middle school, while the teachers turn a blind eye. Now, in his third year of high school, sincerely regretting his past actions, he sets on a journey of redemption, to meet Shouko once more and make amends.
The plot of the show is just beautiful that even a robot will cry after watching it. The drama in the show is really great that actually I think similar things happen in real life. For example, if ex-convicts desire to start a new life after getting out of prison, believe me that the society still look at them with disgusting faces. They will never give any chances. Same thing happened to Ishida as he just want a second chance to redeem himself. The show also explores the cruel reality of human's nature. In this movie, you will see how fragile the bonds between Ishida and his so-called "friends". At that time, he realizes that he can't trust anyone in the world except himself. He also stopped trying to reach up to people as he afraid they will betray him again. Compared to Fairy Tail where Natsu is always willing to sacrifice his lives to save his friends and vice versa, Ishida just got isolated alone for the mistakes that all of his classmates done. In my opinion, in terms of plot there are only a few anime that can rival Koe no Katachi, so I will rate the plot of the anime 10 out of 10.
Let's talk about the characters in this movie. I believe wholeheartedly if someone said to me that this movie is based on a true story. The characters that exist are very human-like. Their heart are not so pure like Naruto that will forgive any villain even though the latter may have kill thousands of innocents. In this movie, it shows that people will hate you for your one mistake, rather than appreciate you for all the deeds you have done. I think that one of the side characters that truly stand out is Ishida Miyako, Ishida's mom. Compared to other anime where the most of mother characters are crazy and funny, Ishida Miyako will make you love your mother more than ever. As a single mother, she never burden her children with anything and will sacrifice anything for them. This can clearly be seen at the beginning of the story where she paid for the damages done by Ishida to Nishimiya but she never let out her anger to Ishida. She always forgive Ishida and hope that he can change himself for the better. Trust me, she is one of the best mom ever exist in anime history. To sum up, all the characters in this movie play their own role to the best and for that, I will give 10 out of 10.
Koe no Katachi is produced by Kyoto Animation, so we should expect a high quality animation. Obviously, they didn't disappoint us, they really deliver their best. Based on their past projects like Clannad, I think that Kyoto Animation is at its best when they are producing drama-themed anime. It feels like they manage to express the emotion of their characters through their animation. The characters, the environment, all of it are drawn beautifully by the great animators behind the movie. Even the fish and water seems alive in the show, a proof how much effort they put for this anime. To be honest, I can't complain anything about animation when the anime is produced by Kyoto Animation because they are one of the best in the industry. So, I will score 10 out of 10 for the animation of the show because they are just so good and when you watch it, even you will be mesmerized by the works of Kyoto Animation.
Finally, the only shortcoming of this movie for me is the music and sound. Comparing this movie to Kimi no Na Wa that aired at the same year, the latter has RADWIMPS elevating their movie to a higher level with great soundtracks, Koe no Katachi lacks that. The opening of the movie is "My Generation" by The Who while the ending is "Koi wo Shita no wa" by aiko. In my opinion, both of it are less impactful to the movie. I believe that if the soundtracks were improved, there are many scenes that will be better in terms of emotion. Other than that, there are not so much things that I want to complain about. To conclude, I will give 8 out of 10 for the music and sounds of this movie as they are not so impressive to me.
In a nutshell, this is a movie that comes out once in a decade. It is a movie that explores the moral values of human to the best. It is a movie that perfectly shown the true nature of human, the human that is imperfect, that have many faces and will find ways to save their own selves. But, they also will try their best to improve themselves to be a better person. After I finished watching the movie, I truly wondered how this movie lost to The Boss Baby in Oscar. The Boss Baby is a entertaining movie, but it really didn't stand a chance against Koe no Katachi in terms of storytelling, animation and others. Anyway, I'm going to rate this movie 9.5 out of 10. That's all from, thank you for reading.
